AI summary

FW Lite users with no internet can now pass a CRDT project between desktops on a USB drive, or any folder. In a project, Sync with folder... writes this device's commits and media into the folder and takes in everything other devices left there. On the home screen, Open from folder... downloads the project from the folder, or syncs with it if this device already has the project. Whoever next reaches the internet uploads everything to Lexbox with a normal sync, so no new server code is needed.

This is the folder half of the offline sync work. The Wi-Fi host/join half stays on its own branch and will follow separately.

What's in it

  • Sync folder. The folder holds a manifest.json (project id, code, name, origin, writing systems) and Harmony's JsonSyncable commit log, one client_<id>.jsonl per device. An empty folder becomes a sync folder. A folder holding other files, a damaged manifest or a manifest from a newer app version is refused. The manifest is written to a temp file and renamed, and it's rewritten after every sync.
  • Identity check (ProjectIdentity, ProjectIdentityService). Two copies only merge when they have the same project id and the same root commit (the first commit in Harmony's order), and share at least one writing system. The folder's actual commits decide its history, not what the manifest claims. A different project or a different history is refused, never merged.
  • Media. Blob files are copied both ways on every sync, keyed by resource id (IMediaStore, FolderMediaStore, MediaCopier). Only LocalResource entries are filled in. No RemoteResource change is made, so a picture taken offline is still uploaded to Lexbox on its first online sync.
  • Anonymous offline author (CurrentAuthorService, ILocalAuthorProvider). With no Lexbox user known, commits and comments get a stable per-device author id with an anonymous: prefix and the device name, instead of failing. The author logic lives in HarmonyChangeWriter and CrdtCommentApi.
  • Lexbox sync date. Commits read from a folder have their Lexbox sync date cleared, so a device that has never been online doesn't report another device's Lexbox sync as its own.
  • SyncResultsProcessor. Comment read status and change notifications moved out of SyncService, so Lexbox sync and folder sync share them.
  • UI (Windows app only). A "Sync with a USB drive or another folder" section in the FW Lite sync tab, with Sync with folder... and Sync with again, plus Open from folder... on the home screen. Folder picking uses the WinUI FolderPicker. Both actions only show where IPlatformFeaturesService.SupportsFolderSync() is true, which today means only the Windows MAUI app. FwLiteWeb runs in a browser, which can't hand over a real folder path, and Android folder access is deferred.

Known limitations

  • If a drive is pulled out mid-write, Harmony's JsonSyncable can be left with a truncated commit line, which makes that folder unreadable until a new folder is used. A separate Harmony change fixes this.
  • LcmMediaService.RecordLocalCopy writes the LocalResource row through the DbContext, as a stop-gap until Harmony exposes a public ResourceService.AddLocalCopy (in progress separately).
  • Each folder sync loads the project's resources twice.
  • Two devices holding the same pending picture will both upload it once online. Whether Lexbox deduplicates by file id isn't verified.
  • Folder sync UI is Windows only: no FwLiteWeb (Linux) or Android support yet.
  • An anonymous offline author still can't comment from the viewer: the comment UI only shows when a Lexbox user is known. The backend accepts their comments.
  • When the folder holds a different project, the sync dialog says which, but doesn't offer to switch to it; the user goes to Open from folder... on the home screen.

Test plan

  • dotnet test backend/FwLite/LcmCrdt.Tests --filter "FullyQualifiedName~LcmCrdt.Tests.LocalSync": identity check, sync folder states, folder sync (export, round trip, refusals, interrupted export), folder media, open from folder, anonymous author
  • FwLiteShared.Tests, full LcmCrdt.Tests
  • Builds: FwLiteWeb, FwHeadless, FwLiteMaui (net10.0-windows10.0.19041.0)
  • sync-dialog.test.ts: folder section hidden without picker support, picked-folder sync, cancelled picker
  • task verify, task check-generated
  • Manual, Windows app: sync project A to an empty folder on a USB drive, open the folder on a second machine (Open from folder...), edit on both, sync each with the drive, and check that both see all edits and pictures
  • Manual: pick a non-empty unrelated folder and a folder for another project, and check the messages

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Lets desktops pass a CRDT project through a sync folder with no
internet: the folder holds a manifest and Harmony's JsonSyncable commit
log, plus the media files, and syncs two-way on every trip.

- Identity check (project id, root commit, a shared writing system)
before any merge; the folder's commits decide its history
- Anonymous per-device author when no Lexbox user is known, applied in
  HarmonyChangeWriter and CrdtCommentApi
- Media copied both ways as LocalResource entries only, so offline
pictures are still uploaded to Lexbox later
- Comment read status and change notifications moved into
SyncResultsProcessor, shared by Lexbox and folder sync
- Windows app UI: Sync with folder... in the sync dialog and Open from
folder... on the home screen, behind
  IPlatformFeaturesService.SupportsFolderSync

Walkthrough

The change adds project identity and local author handling, two-way project and media synchronization through folders, and project opening from folders. Backend services expose these operations through platform and JavaScript interfaces. The frontend adds folder selection, synchronization controls, remembered-folder actions, outcome messages, tests, stories, and locale entries.

Syncing with a freshly inserted USB drive may be refused when the user picks the drive root, because hidden system folders make it look non-empty. Folder open and sync errors are also reported silently. Fix the empty-folder check before merging; error feedback can follow.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Ignore hidden and system entries when you decide whether a folder is empty.

The overload Directory.EnumerateFileSystemEntries(path) with no options returns hidden and system entries. Windows creates System Volume Information (and often $RECYCLE.BIN) at the root of most removable drives. If a user picks the drive root (for example E:\), Inspect returns NotASyncFolder. SyncWithFolder then refuses the sync and shows "This folder has other files in it". The main case, "Sync with a USB drive", then fails on a new drive unless the user creates a subfolder first.

Handle rejection from pickFolder and openFromFolder.

openFromFolder has try/finally but no catch. The click handler calls it with void. If pickFolder or projectsService.openFromFolder rejects, the user sees no message from this component. The error also escapes as an unhandled rejection. The backend can throw, for example when the drive is removed during the copy. loading does reset in finally, so the UI does not stay stuck. The failure is silent, though.

Add a catch that shows a warning notification, or confirm that a global error handler reports this case.

Rejections from folder sync are not reported to the user.

run resets syncing and running in finally, so the button does not stay disabled. It has no catch. The click handlers call run with void. If pickFolder or service.syncWithFolder rejects, the user gets no feedback beyond an unhandled rejection. Show a warning notification in a catch, or confirm that a global handler covers this case.

Changes:

  • Import project from folder, instead of open
  • change the folder sync button to have the same style as the Harmony auto sync button
  • Change the style of the Sync with folder... button should be styled as a link with text "sync with other folder..." when there's an existing folder. Otherwise keep it styled as it is today
  • Let's add a folder path input box for linux support.
