The local provider hardcoded Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2 at 384 dimensions. That model is English-only: its WordPiece vocabulary holds roughly 500 CJK characters, so most Chinese/Japanese/Korean text tokenizes to [UNK] and unrelated CJK records collapse to near-identical vectors (cosine ~1.0). Add AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_MODEL and AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS, mirroring the OpenAI/OpenRouter providers. Defaults stay unchanged so existing stores keep working. A small known-model table infers the width for multilingual models and an explicit override covers anything else; the existing dimension guard still rejects real mismatches. Measured on a 474-record Chinese store (bge-small-zh-v1.5 vs the default): R@5 0.45 -> 0.68, MRR 0.369 -> 0.515. Signed-off-by: Yupeng Lu <yplmicro@gmail.com>

🔴 Same-width model switches corrupt semantic recall
Switching AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_MODEL between same-width models reuses vectors from the old model. The startup guard checks dimensions, not model identity, so queries compare incompatible embeddings and return incorrect results.
Learn more
The vector index persists embeddings across restarts, but its metadata records no model identity. The startup guard rejects only vectors whose widths differ from the active provider. Switching from one 384-dimensional local model to another therefore loads the old embeddings, while all new queries and writes use the new model. Even AGENTMEMORY_VECTOR_BACKFILL=all does not replace those entries: rebuildKeywordIndex skips IDs already present in the vector index.
Example: A store indexed with Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2 restarts with Xenova/multilingual-e5-small. Both declare 384 dimensions. The old index loads and queries use E5 embeddings against MiniLM vectors instead of rebuilding them.
Recommended fix: Persist the active embedding model identity with the vector checkpoint and compare it at startup. On a change, invalidate old vectors and schedule a full re-embedding of stored records, with a safe recovery path for existing checkpoints that lack model metadata.

🟡 Unknown models lose vector search silently
An unknown AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_MODEL without a dimensions override claims 384 dimensions. If the model returns another width, the dimension guard rejects embeddings and search falls back to keywords.
Learn more
The provider declares a fixed output width before loading its model. An unrecognized model receives the default MiniLM width, regardless of the width the model actually emits. withDimensionGuard rejects any different-width result, and HybridSearch silently falls back to keyword results. Live vector writes also skip rejected embeddings.
Example: Set EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=local and choose an unlisted 768-dimensional feature-extraction model without AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS. The constructor accepts it as 384-dimensional; every 768-dimensional result fails the guard, leaving the new model unusable for vector search.
Recommended fix: Require a valid explicit dimensions override for any model absent from MODEL_DIMENSIONS, rather than defaulting unknown models to the MiniLM width.

🟡 Configuration skill omits new embedding settings
Adding AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_MODEL and AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS changes the generated configuration list. That list still omits both settings, so skills:check detects drift.
Learn more
The configuration skill's environment list is generated by env, which scans src/ for AGENTMEMORY_* identifiers. Both new names enter that scan, but the committed configuration list still has its old count and entries. Repository instructions require running skills:gen when the environment surface changes; skills:check compares the checked-in generated file against the source.
Example: The reference still says 77 recognized variables and contains neither AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_MODEL nor AGENTMEMORY_LOCAL_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS, although both now configure the provider.
Recommended fix: Run npm run skills:gen and commit the updated generated configuration reference; then run npm run skills:check.

Exclude special tokens from the unknown-token ratio.
tokenizer(text) adds special tokens by default. Line 26 includes those tokens in ids, but they cannot count as [UNK]. For these short sentences, the reported percentage understates the share of text tokens that the model cannot represent. Tokenize with { add_special_tokens: false } before calculating the ratio. Handle the input prefixes required by E5 models.
When a user selects one of these newly listed E5 models, embedBatch passes raw text to the extractor. The E5 model guidance requires query: and passage: prefixes for retrieval and warns that omitting them reduces performance. Add role-aware input handling, or document and enforce a way for callers to supply the correct prefixes. (huggingface.co)

Reject dimension strings that are not whole integers.
If the setting is 384px, parseInt accepts it as 384. If the setting is 1e3, it accepts 1. Validate the complete string before conversion so a malformed override fails at configuration time.

Invalidate persisted vectors when the local model changes.
LocalEmbeddingProvider can switch to a different model with the same output width. The restore path checks dimensions only, so it can load vectors from the previous model and compare them with vectors from the new model. Search results can become incorrect.
Persist the model identity with the vector index. Reject, invalidate, or re-embed the index when the identity changes.

Require a dimension override for unknown models.
If a selected model is absent from MODEL_DIMENSIONS, this fallback assigns it the default width of 384. An unknown 768-dimensional model then constructs successfully but fails the dimension guard on its first embedding request. Throw at construction unless the caller supplied a width.

src/providers/embedding/local.tsis the only embedding provider that cannot be configured — it hardcodes both the model and its width:Every other provider (OpenAI, OpenRouter, Gemini, Voyage, Cohere) reads its model from the environment.
