fix(admin-panel): show Clear Rate Limits progress and result inline - #21627
Clear Rate Limits gave no sign of progress while the request ran. The buttons stayed active, so an admin could click again.
Results and errors showed in window.alert dialogs. A clear with no prior search also showed no results list.
This pull request
Disables Search and Clear while a clear runs. The Clear button shows "Clearing..." until the request settles.
Shows success, failure and the validation error inline. Success uses role="status" and errors use role="alert". The component no longer calls window.alert.
Clears the old message when a new search or clear starts.
Shows the results list after a clear with no prior search (setShowResults(true)).
Adds the disabled:opacity-40 style to both buttons, as other admin pages do.
All changes are in PageRateLimiting/index.tsx and index.test.tsx.
Risk
Risk: Low (the worst of the three below)
Merge risk: Low. 2 files, +110 -31: other code.
Rollback: Easy. A plain revert; it ships on the next train.
Verification: Strong. A test fails without the fix (verify --revert). 7 checks pass. A screenshot or video is attached.
Would not catch: how a real admin-server and production Redis respond, or browsers other than the jsdom test environment and Storybook Firefox.
If applicable, I have modified or added tests which pass locally.
I have added necessary documentation (if appropriate).
I have verified that my changes render correctly in RTL (if appropriate).

The screenshot shows the Default story only. The inline message states have no screenshot. They appear after a user types and clicks, and the admin panel stories have no play functions. Unit tests cover them.

Out of scope:
No fetch timeout in packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/lib/api.ts. The ticket root cause mentions it, but no acceptance criterion asks for it.
The speed of the server-side Redis scan is tracked separately.
Testing:
/fxa-verify PASS: admin-panel tests, lint, format (Prettier) and types.
index.test.tsx fails without the fix and passes with it (/fxa-verify --revert).
New tests: "disables both buttons and shows a pending label while clearing" and "renders the results list after a clear with no prior search". The existing alert tests now assert the inline role="status" and role="alert" messages.
index.test.tsx has 11 tests.
No functional spec covers this page. The local stack does not run the admin panel UI.

Merge Confidence: 4/5
The rate-limiting page shows validation, clear-success, and clear-failure messages inline. While a clear is pending, it disables Search and Clear and changes the Clear button label to “Clearing...”. After a successful clear, it fetches and displays the results, even if the user did not search first.
Tests cover inline messages, pending button states, failed clears, and results after clearing. Test execution results were not provided.

Walkthrough
PageRateLimiting now reports validation and clear outcomes inline instead of using browser alerts. Clearing tracks a pending state, disables both buttons, and refreshes rate-limit results after success. Tests cover validation, pending controls, and clear outcomes.

Summary
In-page validation and status packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/components/PageRateLimiting/index.tsx, packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/components/PageRateLimiting/index.test.tsx
Search and clear validation use a shared message. The page displays validation and clear status in accessible alert or status elements. Editing a search field clears the current status. Tests verify invalid requests do not call the APIs or window.alert.
Clear request lifecycle and results packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/components/PageRateLimiting/index.tsx, packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/components/PageRateLimiting/index.test.tsx
Clearing disables both buttons and changes the clear-button label while pending. The page displays success or failure, resets the pending state, and shows refreshed results after success. Tests cover pending controls, clearing without a prior search, and clear outcomes.
Filter edits made during a clear can be lost. Operators can re-enter them, but the form should preserve or prevent those edits.

Explanation
The title follows the required type(scope): subject format, uses the allowed fix type, starts with the imperative lowercase subject "show," has no trailing period, is 67 characters long, and accurately describes the inline clear-rate-limits progress and result changes.
Full details: Sensitive Data Protection And Privacy
Explanation
No custom-check failure is introduced. The reviewed diff changes only the PageRateLimiting UI and tests. New messages contain a fixed validation string, a record count, or the same clear error text that the base version already displayed in a browser alert. It adds no logging, metrics, Sentry event, third-party transmission, credential/config secret, retention/deletion logic, or query/cache isolation change. The server's existing rate-limit logging is outside the PR diff.
Full details: Security, Audit, And Regulatory Control Integrity
Explanation
The PR changes only the admin rate-limiting UI and tests. It preserves calls to the existing rate-limit endpoints, while authentication, feature guards, and the controller's @AuditLog remain unchanged. No authentication, token, cryptography, webhook, audit, PCI, GDPR, or service-side rate-limiting control is weakened.
Full details: Database Migration Safety
Explanation
The pull request changes only packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/components/PageRateLimiting/index.tsx and its test file. No file under packages/db-migrations/databases/*/patches/ or any target-patch.json is modified. Therefore, no database migration safety condition applies.
Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity Review
Explanation
The clear flow still has no timeout or abort guard. The PR sets clearing to true at PageRateLimiting/index.tsx:96 and awaits adminApi.clearRateLimits at line 98. The shared apiFetch calls bare fetch without a timeout or abort signal at packages/fxa-admin-panel/src/lib/api.ts:37-49; clearRateLimits uses this transport at lines 220-228. If the clear request hangs, the finally block never runs, so both buttons remain disabled and the Clear button remains Clearing... indefinitely. The PR no longer awaits the post-clear refetch, so a hung refetch does not retain clearing, but the hung clear request remains an introduced user-visible failure.
Resolution
Add a bounded, abortable timeout to the rate-limit clear request or the shared apiFetch transport. Convert timeout failures into the existing inline error status, and keep the finally cleanup so clearing returns to false after timeout or other failure.

The clear tests cover successful refreshes and clear failures, but not a rejected getRateLimits call after clearRateLimits succeeds. Add a test that asserts the clear success, refresh error, and re-enabled buttons.

End the clear pending state when the clear request finishes.
If the refresh stalls after the POST succeeds, both buttons remain disabled and the button still says “Clearing...”. Track the refresh separately so the operator can continue. Prevent an older refresh from overwriting a newer search.

Clear status when the filters change.
After clearing IP A, an operator can edit the field to IP B while the success message remains visible. The message does not identify A, so it can be mistaken for B’s result. Clear the status on filter edits or identify the submitted filters in the message.
Based on learnings: “Clear/reset the error state when the user edits the relevant field(s) or retries.”

Preserve filter edits made during a clear request.
If an operator edits a filter while clearRateLimits is pending, this completion shows success for the old filters. The subsequent reset(values) also discards the edit. Disable the inputs while clearing, or preserve edits and associate the status with the submitted filters. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
