fix(theme): handle announcement bar ID changes - #12688
When a site administrator updates the announcement bar with a new id in docusaurus.config.js, visitors who previously dismissed the old announcement may see the new announcement hidden on the first page load.
The inline script previously checked only the stored dismissal flag and did not account for changes to the announcement ID. This caused the initial HTML attribute to hide the new announcement until a manual page refresh.
This PR updates the inline script and AnnouncementBarProvider to consider the stored announcement ID when determining the dismissal state. It also preserves backward compatibility with the legacy default announcement ID.
Test Plan
Added regression tests covering:
No stored dismissal.
Matching stored announcement ID.
A previously dismissed announcement with a different ID.
Backward compatibility with the legacy annoucement-bar ID.
Non-closeable announcements.
Storage errors and namespace handling.
Validation performed:
Targeted Vitest tests: 23 passed across 2 test files.
Announcement bars are dismissed only when the saved dismissal applies to the current bar and the bar can be closed. Changing the announcement ID no longer incorrectly hides a new bar.
Existing dismissal settings saved with the legacy misspelled ID remain recognized.
Announcement visibility stays consistent before and after the page finishes loading, including when browser storage cannot be read.

Walkthrough
Announcement-bar dismissal now depends on the configured ID and closeability in both the context provider and pre-hydration inline script. Tests cover ID matching, legacy IDs, storage behavior, and visibility around React mounting.

Summary
Context provider dismissal state packages/docusaurus-theme-common/src/contexts/announcementBar.tsx, packages/docusaurus-theme-common/src/contexts/__tests__/announcementBar.test.tsx
The provider checks the stored dismissal flag and ID against the current announcement-bar configuration. It also accounts for closeability and the legacy misspelled ID. Tests cover provider state and dismissal persistence.
The inline script receives the announcement-bar configuration and sets initial dismissal state according to closeability and ID. Tests cover script output, stored IDs, storage errors, namespaced storage, and visibility across script execution and React mounting.
The announcement-bar ID change appears ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved issue was identified.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 0a5f4
The change remains confined to announcement visibility and browser-stored presentation preferences. The reviewed production path adds no privileges, sensitive-data access, or new externally callable interface.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The change can affect announcement presentation for visitors to sites adopting the updated theme. Manipulating the browser-stored values changes presentation within the applicable storage origin and namespace; the reviewed path does not turn that control into backend access or additional privileges.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Site configuration remains the authority for announcement identity and closeability. Browser preference values are checked against that configuration, with non-closeable announcements bypassing stored dismissal during initialization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Storage remains best-effort presentation state. Inline-script read failures produce a visible announcement, while provider storage operations catch individual failures. The ID and dismissal writes are separate rather than atomic, so persistence failure can produce later visibility differences; this mechanism predates the PR.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(theme): handle announcement bar ID changes" matches the main change. The PR updates the announcement bar inline script and AnnouncementBarProvider so a changed announcement ID is not hidden by an older dismissal. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It also fits the linked issue #12646, which asks for a new announcement ID to appear on the first page load after a previous dismissal.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #12646 requires the new announcement to appear on the first load when its configured ID differs from the stored dismissed ID. inlineScripts.ts now requires a matching stored ID before it sets the initial-dismissed state. index.ts passes the configured announcement bar to the script. announcementBar.tsx applies the same rule during initialization and hydration. The tests cover changed IDs, matching IDs, missing IDs, legacy IDs, non-closeable bars, storage errors, and namespaces. The excluded snapshot file does not prevent assessment of the behavioral tests and source changes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed source files implement ID-aware announcement dismissal for issue #12646. The changed test files verify the inline script and provider behavior, including compatibility and error cases. No unrelated functional changes appear in the supplied whole-PR summary. The excluded snapshot is a test artifact for the inline script and does not establish out-of-scope work.
