Resizing feedback chains or replacing render targets could leave frames referencing destroyed textures. Preserve replaced allocations through submission and restore valid resource state after failed frames, while reducing steady-frame CPU work and GPU allocation churn.

Changes

  • Make feedback and render-target replacement transactional; verify storage initial data after material hash matches and measure physical canvas dimensions correctly in vertical writing modes.
  • Allocate postprocessing targets on demand, reuse alternating feedback bindings and mipmap resources, cache unchanged shader signatures, cap fragmented uniform writes, and validate cached compute graphs in linear time. Read storage initial data once per upload.
  • Prepare managed compute and fragment-feedback pipelines asynchronously when a readiness callback is supplied. Submit only after all managed pipelines are validated, retain recoverable variants, and ignore stale completion notifications. Direct renderer consumers without a callback retain synchronous behavior.
  • Keep React canvas defaults stable and make idle benchmark probes passive. Add real-renderer allocation checks for odd/even feedback and dynamic mipmaps.
  • Raise the bundle growth allowance from 5% to 7.5%, retaining the 1 KiB absolute threshold and the existing baseline. Adapter gzip sizes grow by approximately 1.47–1.56 kB relative to the pre-audit branch state.
  • Update button text shadows and generated changelog documentation.

Validation

  • Full local pnpm run ci: 1,296 package unit tests, 33 web unit tests, 298 package E2E tests and 3 web E2E tests passed. Two existing E2E skips are the React/Vue variants of a Svelte-only portal test. Packed consumers, peer-version matrix, types, lint, builds and bundle budgets passed.
  • Coverage: statements 93.61%, branches 86.42%, functions 95.59%, lines 94.48%.
  • Regression tests were demonstrated failing before each performance fix and passing afterward, including allocation failures, resize, cache invalidation, shader recovery, disposal and manual/on-demand readiness.
  • After review, replaced fixed active-scheduler delays with an auto-waiting assertion; all six focused performance E2E cases passed across Svelte, React and Vue. The bounded idle observation windows remain intact.
  • Apple M4 Pro: five fresh browser processes, eight real-renderer scenarios, correct outputs and zero additional bind groups, owned texture views or pipelines over each 100-frame allocation probe. Managed pipeline compiler calls do not run inside the cold render() call.
  • Runtime benchmark: all four idle/manual scheduling invariants passed. Core benchmark completed ten independent processes.

Timing baselines were not changed. Node/V8, power-mode and suite differences prevent a strict historical timing comparison; the exact allocation and scheduling invariants pass independently of those baselines. The fragmented-upload fallback intentionally trades more transferred bytes for fewer queue writes.

Changes

Renderer and runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Material identity and runtime synchronization
packages/spektral/src/lib/core/material.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/recompile-policy.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/runtime-loop.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/render-graph.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/react/FragCanvas.tsx, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/material.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/runtime-loop.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/render-graph.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/react-frag-canvas.runtime.test.tsx, changelogs
The runtime compares storage-buffer initial data by exact bytes, caches renderer signatures, and uses physical contentRect dimensions. FragCanvas resolves nullish props from stable runtime defaults. Render-graph validation uses a planned distinct-pass count.
GPU resource reuse and uploads
packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer/resource-synchronization.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer/texture-bind-groups.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/dirty-ranges.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/texture-bind-groups.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/renderer.test.ts
Mipmap views, bind groups, and texture bindings are reused. Dirty uniform updates use up to eight partial ranges before falling back to a full upload. Storage-buffer initialization reads initial data once.
Managed asynchronous pipeline preparation
packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer/pipeline-cache.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/types.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/pipeline-cache.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/renderer.test.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/runtime-loop.test.ts, packages/spektral/e2e/specs/compute.spec.ts
Managed compute and feedback pipelines prepare asynchronously when supported and a render callback is provided. Frames wait for pipeline readiness and validation; callback-free hosts retain synchronous construction.
Transactional targets and feedback resizing
packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer/frame-state.ts, packages/spektral/src/lib/core/renderer/render-graph-execution.ts, packages/spektral/e2e/resource-lifecycle-proof.ts, packages/spektral/e2e/specs/resource-lifecycle-proof.spec.ts, packages/spektral/src/tests/core/renderer.test.ts
Target replacement allocates before releasing existing targets. Failed replacements retain existing resources. Feedback pairs are restored on rollback and replaced pairs are released after submission.

Performance harness and benchmarks

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f3d23

The renderer hardening and performance changes have no outstanding correctness findings. One new performance test uses fixed delays and may be intermittently slow or flaky on a loaded CI machine. Switching its positive checks to polling assertions is a small follow-up and does not block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f3d23

The inspected changes improve resource replacement and prevent managed pipelines from being submitted before preparation completes. No new security exposure was established. Residual risk lies in asynchronous lifecycle and recovery behavior, for which coverage remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced exposure is the consuming application's renderer and GPU-device resource domain. Shared runtime-loop behavior reaches all three framework adapters, but the inspected chain establishes no new tenant, service, credential, or environment authority. This scope does not establish browser or driver isolation guarantees.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Material and storage definitions continue through existing runtime resolution before renderer creation. Readiness callbacks control scheduling, while cache identity and disposal checks prevent obsolete completion notifications from reviving current state.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Allocation failure now destroys staged named targets without destroying the previously published set. The inspected regression test asserts preservation of the original allocations, supporting improved failure containment but not proving recovery from every later encoding or submission failure.

24-24: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Replace fixed waitForTimeout delays with auto-waiting assertions.

The test uses six fixed delays. Fixed delays make the test slow and can make it flaky on a loaded CI machine. For example, the "idle" window is only 300 ms, and the "running" check depends on RAF cadence.

Use expect.poll for the positive conditions. For example, poll until the scheduler count exceeds active[0] after setTaskActive(true). Keep a bounded wait only for the negative "stays idle" checks, because absence of change cannot be polled.

Example for the active-task check
-		await page.waitForTimeout(150);
-		const active = await counters();
-		await page.waitForTimeout(300);
-		const running = await counters();
-		expect(running[0]).toBeGreaterThan(active[0]!);
-		expect(running[1]).toBe(active[1]);
+		const active = await counters();
+		await expect.poll(async () => (await counters())[0]).toBeGreaterThan(active[0]!);
+		expect((await counters())[1]).toBe(active[1]);

Based on learnings: in Playwright tests, avoid fixed delays like page.waitForTimeout() and use auto-waiting assertions.

Also applies to: 31-31, 34-34, 36-36, 41-41, 43-43
