Candlewick app icon: a glowing live price line ending in a pulsing dot

Candlewick

Live crypto and stock prices in the macOS menu bar and the Windows taskbar, with a real-time chart, order book and trades.

Latest release macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon Windows 10 or 11 License: GPL-3.0

简体中文

Crypto comes from Binance, Bybit or OKX public market data, no account needed; tokens that only trade on-chain come from DEX Screener and GeckoTerminal, also without an account. US, Hong Kong and China A-share stocks come from Longbridge, with your own OpenAPI keys; China A-shares, indexes, sector boards and ETFs can also come from Tonghuashun, with a free API key. It speaks English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

The Candlewick chart window: BTC/USDT one-minute candlesticks updating live, the 24-hour high, low and volume, and a 20-level order book with buy and sell pressure

Features

  • One instrument always in the menu bar or taskbar, and up to 30 in the dropdown
  • Crypto: Binance, Bybit or OKX, any spot pair
  • On-chain: any pool DEX Screener lists, on Solana, Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain and the rest, priced in USD; add your own CoinGecko API key and candles come on your quota, faster on a paid plan
  • Stocks: US (including pre-market, after-hours and overnight), Hong Kong and China A-shares from Longbridge, by code; China A-shares, indexes, Tonghuashun's sector boards and ETFs from Tonghuashun, by code or Chinese name
  • A chart that moves with every trade, with the order book and recent trades
  • Chart analysis: a hover card with each candle's figures, moving averages and Bollinger Bands, and trend lines, levels, Fibonacci retracements and measurements that stay with the instrument
  • With an exchange's API key, your total holdings and every account's positions
  • Turn on AI access and Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode can read your quotes and holdings to think them through with you
  • English, 简体中文 or 日本語, following your system or picked in Settings
  • Red-up or green-up colors, launch at login, automatic updates

Install

macOS: get Candlewick_<version>_aarch64.dmg from the latest release and drag Candlewick into Applications. It needs macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon. It lives in the menu bar, with no Dock icon.

Windows: run Candlewick_<version>_x64-setup.exe. It needs Windows 10 or 11. If SmartScreen stops it, click More info, then Run anyway. The price appears beside the taskbar clock.

Stocks

  1. Get credentials from either source, or both:
    • Longbridge, for US, Hong Kong and China A-shares: the App Key, App Secret and Access Token from the user center at open.longbridge.com.
    • Tonghuashun, for China A-shares, indexes, sector boards and ETFs, without a brokerage account: sign in at fuyao.aicubes.cn with a Tonghuashun account and create an API key.
  2. Paste them into Settings → Longbridge or Settings → Tonghuashun.
  3. Add stocks in the search field by code, such as AAPL, 700 or 600519, and with Tonghuashun by Chinese name too, such as 茅台.

Tonghuashun's quotes refresh every few seconds while the market trades, and its charts have daily and weekly candles. Sign in under Settings → Tonghuashun as well (scan the code with the Tonghuashun app) and your watchlist there and its groups join the dropdown, read only.

Holdings

  1. Create an API key on the exchange; read permission is all it needs. OKX also asks for a passphrase.
  2. Paste it into Settings → Holdings.
  3. The dropdown now leads with Total and its 24h change. Its submenu sums things up: the day's PnL, each account, the largest holdings and open positions; any row opens the holdings window, where the total moves with the market while it is open.
  4. Settings → Holdings → Show total in menu bar (taskbar on Windows) puts the total there instead of a price.

FAQ

Does it work where the exchange's website is blocked? Yes. It goes through your system proxy and switches to backup addresses when the main ones don't answer.

How much does it use? With no window open it holds the price connections and redraws the bar only when a quote arrives.

Does it collect any data? No. It only talks to the exchanges, DEX Screener, GeckoTerminal, Longbridge and Tonghuashun you use, and to GitHub for updates (you can turn that off in the settings). Keys stay on your computer, and Candlewick never trades. With AI access on, AI agents on your computer can read its data; other computers and web pages can't.

Is there a build for Intel Macs? Not yet.

Build from source

You need a Rust toolchain, 1.98 or later. On Windows it must be the MSVC toolchain with the Visual Studio C++ build tools; on a Mac you need macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon.

cargo run # run from source
cargo build --release # the binary lands in target/release/

The first build downloads thsdk's runtime (for Tonghuashun sign-in) into thsdk/, pinned by hash. A run from source loads it from target/Frameworks/ on macOS and from beside the executable on Windows, so copy thsdk/hq.dylib there (or thsdk/hq.dll beside the executable); a bundle carries it in Contents/Frameworks. Set CANDLEWICK_CONFIG_DIR to a directory of your own to keep a development run away from your real settings and keys.

docs/windows.md covers the Windows side and docs/release.md covers releases.

Project structure

  • src/main.rs: starts the app; GPUI draws the windows and runs the event loop, a tokio runtime does the network I/O
  • src/ui/: the three windows as GPUI views, the palette in theme.rs, and the widgets they share
  • src/api.rs: what the windows call to read and change settings, keys, quotes and holdings
  • src/platform/: the macOS menu bar and the Windows taskbar, and the rest that differs between the two systems
  • src/market/: prices and holdings, one implementation per source. How to add one: docs/market-data-providers.md
  • src/portfolio.rs: what holdings are worth
  • src/agent/: AI access, a local read-only API and its skill; see docs/agent-access.md
  • locales/: every word in English, Chinese and Japanese, one file per surface; see docs/i18n.md

Built with Rust and GPUI, through gpui-fast and GPUI Kit.

License

GPL-3.0. Candlewick is not affiliated with Binance, Bybit, OKX, DEX Screener, CoinGecko, Longbridge or Tonghuashun. Signing in to Tonghuashun uses the runtime of thsdk (MIT), which the app carries with its license. Prices are for reference only and are not financial advice.
