Race the providers that map the requested host - #22
NewConnectedRoundTripper now races every provider that has a mapping for the requested host, and only those. Until now it took whichever front was ready, from any provider, and only found out at RoundTrip that the provider couldn't serve the host.
What happened in the field: in Iran, 98 requests failed with no domain fronting mapping for 'freddie.iantem.io' on provider aliyun.
The pool's ready queue mixes every provider's fronts, so an aliyun front connected and won kindling's connect race.
The request was a POST /v1/signal, and kindling sends a POST exactly once. So the race returned the mapping error without trying smart or Soar, even though nothing had been sent.

Changes
connected.go:
One lane per mapped provider.NewConnectedRoundTripper finds the providers whose mapping covers the host and runs one lane for each. The first front to connect wins. The other lanes are cancelled, and a front that connects anyway is closed and returned to the pool. If the caller's ctx ends first, the call returns at once instead of waiting out a TLS handshake, which runs on its own 5 s deadline.
No mapping fails at once. If no provider maps the host, the call fails without dialing, so kindling counts it as a connect failure and moves on to the other transports. An address with no host races every provider, as before.
Each lane (connectVia) dials up to maxRetries of its provider's fronts, one at a time:
It prefers ready fronts, the ones the crawler has vetted.
When none of its provider's fronts are ready, it vets and dials that provider's other fronts itself, most recently successful first. The crawler stops once 4 fronts are ready in total, so every ready front can belong to providers that can't serve the host.
It never dials the same front twice.
It stops if a config update drops its provider's mapping for the host mid-race.
A provider with no test URL can't vet fallback fronts, so its lane ends before the fallback rather than marking those fronts failed.
It stops once the client is closed, since fallback fronts skip pool.Take, which is where a closed pool reports it.
Fallback fronts are vetted first (dialUnvetted). A front can complete TLS yet refuse to forward, and the winning front carries the request with no retry. So a fallback front must first pass the crawler's check, a POST to the provider's test URL. The lane then dials it again for the caller. Cancelling the race stops a lane waiting on that check.
front.go:
A front is queued in the ready queue at most once. Overlapping connects can fall back to the same front and each return it, and the crawler can vet a front a request is holding. Before, each return added another entry, so readyCount overstated the fronts ready and the crawler stopped replenishing early.
Scans of the ready queue are serialized. A scan holds the fronts it skips until it puts them back, so two lanes scanning at once could each miss the other's ready front. TakePreferringUntried takes the same lock.
Verification
go build ./... and go test -race -count=1 -timeout 60s ./... (CI's commands) pass.
New tests in connected_race_test.go. Each fails on the code before its fix:
SkipsProvidersWithoutMapping
FailsAtOnceWhenNoProviderMapsTheHost
RacesEveryMappedProvider: one provider's fronts are dead and another has none, and the third provider still wins. It failed about 1 run in 20 without the scan lock and passes 50 of 50 with it.
DialsUnvettedFrontsWhenNoneReady
DoesNotRedialAFailedFront
VetsUnvettedFronts: a front that completes TLS but fails the check can't win.
CancelStopsVetting: the race returns within its deadline while the check hangs.
CancelDoesNotWaitForHandshake: the race returns within its deadline while a front's TLS handshake hangs.
ConnectVia_StopsWhenTheMappingIsGone: a lane whose provider no longer maps the host returns its front and stops.
NoTestURLLeavesFrontsAlone: a fallback front isn't marked failed when its provider has no test URL.
FrontPool_QueuesAFrontOnce and OverlappingFallbacksQueueOnce: a front returned several times takes one place in the ready queue.
ClosedPoolDialsNothing: a closed client vets and dials nothing.
Exit: approve. Round 4 ran after the user chose the fix for round 3's finding, past the usual 3-round cap.
Fixed:
connected.go:83: a lane could wait forever, because the crawler stops once enough fronts are ready across all providers. Lanes now dial their provider's unvetted fronts.
connected.go:93: that fallback could dial a ready front that had just failed, and spend the lane's last attempt on it. Lanes now track the fronts they've tried.
connected.go:144: a fallback front could win on its TLS handshake alone, including one the crawler had rejected for failing to forward. Fallback fronts now pass the crawler's check first.
Dismissed: none
Copilot's first review raised the mid-race mapping change and the handshake wait. Both are fixed in a2c1bbb. CodeRabbit pointed out that fronts were marked failed when the provider had no test URL; fixed in e195849. Copilot's second review found that overlapping users could queue a front twice; fixed in 0dfb93d. Its summary also found that lanes ignored a closed client; fixed in 248a8c8.
NewConnectedRoundTripper ignored addr and dialed whichever ready front
came first. If that front's provider had no mapping for the host, the
connection "succeeded" and the request then failed in RoundTrip with
"no domain fronting mapping". For a POST, kindling's race returns that
error without trying another transport, which lost ~100 Iranian
freddie signal requests in four days (provider aliyun, on a config
without a freddie alias).
It now races one lane per provider that maps addr's host, each dialing
that provider's ready fronts in turn (up to maxRetries), and the first
front to connect wins. Losing lanes are cancelled, and a front that
connects late is closed and requeued. When no provider maps the host it
fails at once, so a race moves on to another transport. A dial that
fails because the race was cancelled requeues the front rather than
marking it failed.

The crawler stops once enough fronts are ready in total, so every ready
front can belong to providers without a mapping for the host. A lane
waiting on the ready queue for its provider then waited for the caller to
give up. It now takes a ready front of its provider if there is one, and
otherwise dials the provider's other fronts directly, most recently
successful first.

A front can complete TLS yet refuse to forward, which the crawler's
POST to the provider's test URL catches. A lane dialing a provider's
unvetted fronts now runs the same check, honoring the race's ctx, and
dials the front again for the caller.

This PR makes connection selection host-aware, racing only providers that can serve the requested host to avoid mapping failures after a transport wins.
Changes:
Race mapped providers independently and fail immediately when none match.
Vet fallback fronts before use and avoid retrying failed fronts within a lane.
Serialize ready-queue scans and add regression tests for provider selection, fallback vetting, and cancellation.

Address review on #22. The TLS handshake runs on a fixed deadline, not
ctx, so the race now returns as soon as ctx ends and releases late
fronts in the background. A lane also rechecks that its provider still
maps the host, since a config update can drop the mapping mid-race.

Handle pool closure during fallback connection attempts
connected.go:68
When the ready queue is empty, the previous pool.Take(ctx) also waited on pool.closed. Neither the fallback lanes nor this result wait observes that signal now, so Client.Close() during a connection attempt no longer releases the waiting caller: fallback vetting/dialing can continue until its deadline and can return a live transport after shutdown. Please handle pool closure here by cancelling the lanes and draining their outstanding results, as on caller cancellation.
Address review on #22. Overlapping connects can fall back to the same
front and each return it, and the crawler can vet a front that a
request holds. Each return added another ready entry, inflating
readyCount and stopping the crawler early. A front now tracks whether
it's queued, and addReady skips one that already is.

Provider lanes bypass the pool’s shutdown signal, allowing new connections after the client is closed.

Honor pool closure before dialing fallback candidates
connected.go:104
The new lane bypasses pool.Take, so it no longer observes pool.closed. With an empty ready queue, calling Client.Close() and then NewConnectedRoundTripper now vets/dials the retained candidates instead of returning cancellation; a successful fallback can even return a new transport after shutdown. Check the pool's closed signal before selecting or dialing each candidate so shutdown still prevents these connections.
Address review on #22. Lanes that fall back to unvetted fronts skip
pool.Take, which is where a closed pool reports context.Canceled, so a
closed client could still vet and dial fronts. Each lane now checks the
pool before every attempt.
