fix(bun): release beforeExit listener when stopping - #2035
After listen() followed by stop(), the Bun adapter left its beforeExit listener registered on process, retaining the stopped app and accumulating listeners across repeated cycles.
Track the owned listener per app, remove it after a successful shutdown, and route beforeExit through the existing stop path. Register the listener before start/listen callbacks so stopping inside them also cleans it up. Preserve other apps' listeners, unrelated process listeners, stop hooks, and the closeActiveConnections argument.
Regression tests cover 12 listen/stop cycles, listener ownership across two apps, shutdown hooks during beforeExit, and stopping from start/listen callbacks. Before the fix the four new cases failed; afterward all nine stop tests pass.
An overlapping graceful stop now captures the server being stopped and preserves a replacement server and its listener if listen() runs while the old server is draining. The regression test holds a real request in flight, then verifies the replacement stays reachable and can still be stopped through app.stop().
Validation with Bun 1.4.4: build including declarations passed; bun run test passed (1619 pass, 2 existing skipped tests, 0 fail), including imports, TypeScript, and Node CommonJS/ESM checks. Independent Codex P0-P2 review found no actionable defects in the patch. The Cloudflare CI gate (npm install, cf-typegen, local Wrangler smoke) also passed. Human review checkboxes remain for the contributor to complete personally.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved server shutdown when the application stops or the process exits. Stop hooks now run during process-exit shutdown, and repeated start/stop cycles no longer leave stale exit handlers behind.
Stopping an application preserves unrelated process exit handlers and keeps the server state consistent, including when a replacement server starts while the previous one is still draining.
Tests
Added coverage for shutdown behavior, listener cleanup, stop hooks, and server replacement.
I have nothing but my burger and I want nothing more
The Bun adapter tracks each app’s beforeExit listener. The listener calls app.stop(). Shutdown removes the tracked listener only if the app still references the server being stopped. Tests cover listener cleanup and server replacement during shutdown.

Register and replace app listeners src/adapter/bun/index.ts, test/core/stop.test.ts
listen() tracks and replaces each app’s beforeExit listener. Tests cover repeated listen/stop cycles, multiple apps, and stops from start and listen callbacks.
Clean up after server shutdown src/adapter/bun/index.ts, test/core/stop.test.ts
stop() clears the server reference and removes the tracked listener only if the app still references the server being stopped. A test checks that a replacement server remains usable while a request to the previous server completes.
The tests cover listener ownership, callback-triggered shutdown, and preserving a replacement server during shutdown. No merge-blocking issue remains in the inspected changes.

Explanation
Issue #2034 requires the Bun adapter to release the beforeExit listener that listen() adds after stop(). The change tracks one listener per app in a WeakMap, routes beforeExit through app.stop(), and removes the listener after the matching server shuts down. Registration before start and listen callbacks covers callback-triggered stops. The reported regression tests cover repeated cycles and listener ownership. One listener waits by the Bun server door ♡ Stop sends it home, not to linger anymore~ A new server can rise while the old requests flow Each app keeps its own listener in tow Neat little cleanup, no warning to show~ Nice work—try not to look too impressed (¬‿¬)

Keep app.server when a newer server replaced the stopped one.

Keep app.server when a newer server replaced the stopped one. ( ˘ω˘ )♡ Zako, your stop path clears the wrong server.
If listen runs while stop awaits the old server, app.server points to the new server. The code after the await clears it anyway and removes the new server's beforeExit listener. The new server keeps accepting connections, but app.stop() can no longer reach it. The stop hooks also fire while it still serves requests. Clear the state only when app.server is still the server that was stopped. A regression test that calls listen before the pending stop resolves covers this ordering (≖‿≖)~
🐛 Suggested fix
if (app.server) {
- await app.server.stop(closeActiveConnections)- app.server = null-- const listener = beforeExitListeners.get(app)- if (listener) {- process.removeListener('beforeExit', listener)- beforeExitListeners.delete(app)- }+ const server = app.server+ await server.stop(closeActiveConnections)++ if (app.server === server) {+ app.server = null++ const listener = beforeExitListeners.get(app)+ if (listener) {+ process.removeListener('beforeExit', listener)+ beforeExitListeners.delete(app)+ }+ }

In the stop flow, capture the server being stopped before awaiting its shutdown,
then clear app.server and remove its beforeExit listener only if app.server
still references that same server. Preserve the replacement server and its
listener when listen starts a newer server before the pending stop resolves.

Fixed in eecc30e. The stop path captures its server before awaiting shutdown and only clears the app state and listener if that server is still current. A real in-flight HTTP regression verifies that a replacement server stays reachable, retains its listener, and can still be stopped through app.stop(). Stop hooks remain once per successfully stopped server.
