🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Aligned modes in XMLBuilder do not align with the first attribute.
The forceAligned and alignWithFirstAttr modes call indent(level + 1). That indent is one tab unit. It is not the column of the first attribute. For <root a='1', the main formatter puts later attributes at column 6. XMLBuilder puts them at column 2. Generated XML therefore differs from what the formatter produces, and a later format run changes it again. The test at XMLDocumentGeneratorAttributeFormattingTest.java Lines 70-74 now expects this unaligned output. The alignWithFirstAttr case also puts the first attribute on a new line, so the generated element does not match the legacy alignWithFirstAttr behavior.
To fix this, compute the alignment column from the start-tag line. Use the current line width after the element name plus one space, and pad the continuation lines with that many spaces.

Auto seems to be working differently than it does for HTML. For this HTML:
<html>
<body>
<beans val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5" val6="val6" val7="val7" val8="val8">
</beans>
</body>
</html>with "html.format.wrapAttributes": "auto" and "html.format.wrapLineLength": 80, the HTML extension formats it as
<html>
<body>
<beans val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5"
val6="val6" val7="val7" val8="val8">
</beans>
</body>
</html>But XML formats this:
<root>
<element val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5" val6="val6" val7="val7" val8="val8" val9="val9">
</element>
</root>like this:
<root>
<element val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5"

It seems like preserve-aligned doesn't work as expected. If I format this:
<root>
<element val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5" val6="val6" val7="val7" val8="val8" val9="val9">
</element>
</root>then I get
<root>
<element val1="val1" val2="val2" val3="val3" val4="val4" val5="val5"
val6="val6" val7="val7" val8="val8" val9="val9">
</element>
</root>Notice how val6 isn't aligned with val1.
If I do the same thing with HTML, val6 is aligned with val1

Account for the attribute value when it remains on the continuation line.
When no formatter participant changes parentConstraints, the continuation branch keeps the attribute on the line without subtracting its value length. The next attribute can therefore wrap later than maxLineWidth permits. Keep the explicit subtraction in the wrap branches and apply the same subtraction in this branch.
