🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Text after a block element does not move to a new line when maxLineWidth is 0.
The new-line rule is guarded by isMaxLineWidthSupported(). It also works only indirectly: it sets availableLineWidth = 0 so that the next word overflows. When maxLineWidth=0, the guard is false. For example, <p>text <div>x</div> more</p> with reflow, blockElements=["div"] and maxLineWidth=0 gives <p>text\n <div>x</div> more\n</p>. The <div> moves to its own line, but more stays after </div>.
The MixedContent.reflow Javadoc says that "text after a block element starts on a new line." The block-element start-tag rule and the end-tag rule in DOMElementFormatter do not depend on maxLineWidth. The text rule must not depend on it either.
The zero-width approach also fails when there is no whitespace before the text (</div>more). In that case spaceStart == -1 stays true, so the overflow branch never runs.
The fix: when the previous sibling is a block element, put explicit indentation before the first non-whitespace character. Do not rely on the width calculation.

+ if (isMixedContent && formatterDocument.isMixedContentReflow()) {
DOMNode prevSibling = textNode.getPreviousSibling();
if (prevSibling != null && prevSibling.isElement()
&& formatterDocument.isBlockElement((DOMElement) prevSibling)) {
- availableLineWidth = 0;
+ int ts = textNode.getStart();
+ int cs = ts;
+ while (cs < textNode.getEnd() && Character.isWhitespace(text.charAt(cs))) {
+ cs++;
+ }
+ if (cs < textNode.getEnd()) {
+ int level = parentConstraints.getMixedContentIndentLevel() == 0 ? indentLevel
+ : parentConstraints.getMixedContentIndentLevel();
+ if (cs == ts) {
+ formatterDocument.insertIndentation(level, cs, edits);
+ } else {
+ replaceLeftSpacesWithIndentation(level, ts, cs, true, edits);
+ }
+ parentConstraints.setSoftWrapped(true);
+ availableLineWidth = formatterDocument.getNewLineAvailableWidth(level);
+ }
}
}After this change, the main loop must not process the leading whitespace a second time. Start the loop at cs, or skip the leading-whitespace branch, so that two edits do not overlap the same range. Add a test with maxLineWidth=0 and a test with </div>more.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
testNormalize_blockElementsIgnored fails on every CI platform. Change the expectation or the formatter so they agree.
CI reports the output <p>text <b>bold</b>\n <div>block</div> more</p>. The test expects <p>text <b>bold</b> <div>block</div> more</p>.
The cause is not the blockElements setting. In normalize mode, formatStartTagElement in DOMElementFormatter.java runs the existing indentation step (lines 259-267). That step applies when the whitespace between two sibling elements contains a line break. It calls replaceLeftSpacesWithIndentationPreservedNewLines, which keeps the line break before <div>. Text nodes are different: the newlines in text\n and \n more are joined because mixedContentJoins is true. The result: newlines between adjacent elements are kept in normalize mode, and newlines inside text nodes are joined.
MixedContent.normalize is documented as "backward-compatible." The newline between elements is the old behavior. Choose one fix:
- Recommended: keep the old behavior. Change the test expectation to the actual output. Also correct the Javadoc of
MixedContent.normalizeandisMixedContentReflow, which say that all newlines are collapsed. - Alternative: if normalize mode must collapse every newline, add a
!isMixedContentReflow()branch at lines 259-267 inDOMElementFormatter.java. That branch must replace the whitespace with one space whenprevSibling != null. This changes the default formatter output, so run the full formatter test suite.
Proposed fix (keep backward-compatible behavior)
- // normalize: all newlines collapsed to spaces, all elements inline
- String expected = "<p>text <b>bold</b> <div>block</div> more</p>";
+ // normalize: newlines inside text are joined; an existing line break
+ // between adjacent sibling elements is kept (backward compatible).
+ // blockElements has no effect.
+ String expected = "<p>text <b>bold</b>" + lineSeparator() + " <div>block</div> more</p>";Check the exact line delimiter. CI reports \n because the input uses \n.

Add two new formatting settings to control how mixed content (text + child elements) is formatted: - xml.format.mixedContent: controls the formatting mode - normalize: collapse whitespace to single space (default) - reflow: smart wrapping at word/element boundaries - expand: always put each child on its own line - preserve: don't reformat mixed content at all - xml.format.blockElements: list of element names treated as block in mixed content. Listed elements get their own line with indentation. Unlisted elements stay inline with surrounding text. When empty (default), all elements are inline (backward compatible). Looks good. Thanks, Angelo!
This PR requires redhat-developer/vscode-xml#1175
Add xml.format.mixedContent and xml.format.blockElements settings
Add two new formatting settings to control how mixed content
(text + child elements) is formatted:
xml.format.mixedContent: controls the formatting mode
xml.format.blockElements: list of element names treated as block
in mixed content. Listed elements get their own line with
indentation. Unlisted elements stay inline with surrounding text.
When empty (default), all elements are inline (backward compatible).
Only effective in reflow mode.
