Summary

Rescues commit 65e126a, which was left stranded on the local windows-compat branch after PR #8 merged. It condenses the contributor CLAUDE.md with what the Windows pass taught: the encoding bullet grows into a single Windows-portability invariant (utf-8 file I/O, as_posix() test comparisons, PYTHONUTF8 stays out of CI, POSIX-only e2e harness) and the testing section trims to match. Net shorter than before.

One conflict resolved against #11: the pin-consistency sentence keeps main's version, which no longer lists NOTICE.md.

Test plan

  • .venv/bin/pytest tests/ -q: 261 passed
  • Docs-only change; no behavior affected
