Reduce repeated evaluator dispatch work over original input (0.1.16) - #8
Adjacent ASCII literal and capture-save bytecodes previously returned to full VM dispatch between operations. Execute them directly over the original subject slice, reuse a repeat record within an active atom chain, and derive the exact work-quantum endpoint once per evaluator run. Preserve every opcode charge, complete captures, paid SAVE retry, pause boundary and storage relocation; program format 16 and public APIs remain unchanged.
Validation passes: stable debug/release suites, all-target checks, strict Clippy, formatting and generated data; exact old/new budget/quantum traces; the complete input-differential workflow in all three automaton modes, including Test262, resumed relocation/growth, native generation, fuzzing and exhaustive properties with the existing reviewed reference disagreements. Six paired Perry 32-regex comparisons reduce instructions by 11.1512% and cycles by 8.9438%; all runs retained. All five exact startup witnesses stay at or below main. The absolute scriptc budget remains open. Includes the 0.1.16 release manifest, changelog and both lockfiles.
Searches using literal patterns and eligible repeated matches can run more efficiently on ASCII input, while preserving existing matching behavior and capture results.
Bug Fixes
Improved consistency when searches pause and resume, including cases where additional scratch space is needed. Retrying after a pause preserves work already performed and produces the expected results and captures.
The evaluator now derives work limits from remaining budget, runs eligible forward ASCII CHAR and SAVE instructions directly, and coordinates atom phases using borrowed repeat records. New tests compare storage formats and verify search resumption, captures, and work accounting.
The trial and instruction evaluators calculate available work from remaining-budget boundaries. The package version changes to 0.1.16, and the changelog records the release changes.
Forward CHAR instructions on ASCII-byte input use literal_run to execute adjacent CHAR and SAVE instructions. Tests compare final search results and captures across UTF-8 and UTF-16 inputs.
Coordinated atom phases src/executor.rs, src/executor/atom.rs, tests/run.rs
The evaluator delegates atom-phase processing to atom_chain. Atom phases share a borrowed repeat record. Tests cover resumption, captures, work accounting, scratch-capacity errors, and storage relocation.
PerryTS/perex#7: Introduces borrowed ProgramSections views and atom-phase chaining, which PR #8 continues in the evaluator.

No blocking behavior change was identified. Comparing paid work across storage forms would strengthen the new test.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 13.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 15 functions across 5 files. For an ASCII subject, UTF-8 execution reaches Vm::literal_run, while UTF-16 execution uses ordinary dispatch. The assertion compares only the final result and captures, so a fast-path opcode that is charged or skipped incorrectly can still pass. Compare final remaining_work() for ASCII subjects. Do not require identical pause traces because the test documents encoding-specific pause sequences.

Update `literal_chains_preserve_complete_captures_across_storage_and_pauses` to
also compare final `remaining_work()` for UTF-8 and UTF-16 executions when the
subject is ASCII. Keep the existing result and capture comparison, and do not
require matching pause traces.
