Each example step was a fresh `python <script>.py` subprocess that spent ~20s importing torch/diffusers/modelopt and initializing CUDA, which was most of every step on the tiny test models. A new in-process runner executes the script with runpy as __main__ and puts back the process-wide state it changes (bare-name sibling modules, the RMSNorm swap, logging, warning filters, environment, cwd, sys.path). The torch.compile steps stay in a subprocess (they pass env=), where the Inductor settings and cudagraphs belong. Make the quantization example's onnx_utils/ and calib/ regular packages: as namespace packages they lose to any same-named module on sys.path, and importing onnxruntime.transformers appends a directory holding its own onnx_utils.py. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Restore levels for loggers created by the script.
If a script creates a logger and sets its level, that logger is absent from levels. Its level persists after the run and can change later tests’ logging. Reset the levels of newly created loggers during cleanup.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Restore the complete sys.path snapshot.
If a script appends a path, removing only example_dir leaves that path in later tests. If a script removes example_dir, this cleanup raises ValueError and skips the remaining state restoration. Save sys.path before the run and restore its original list and contents in finally.

Approve: the in-process runner is correct, has unit tests, plugs into the existing set_in_process_runner hook, and changes only test code. The new __init__.py headers match LICENSE_HEADER exactly.
No action needed.
No action needed:
- The runner restores sibling-module shadowing, the
RMSNormswap, the environment (added keys deleted), warning filters, the working directory, sys.path, logger levels, and the handlers bound to captured stdout. A nonzero exit raises withcaptured_output, so the existing HF transient retry still works. Steps that passenv=(torch.compile) still run as subprocesses, and that warning is filtered. - The fixture is enabled per test, so the runner can't leak into later example suites.
- Some state isn't reset between steps:
torch.backendsflags, modelopt registries, and loggers first created by a script. None of it caused failures in the author's runs, which had identical pass counts and coverage. _all_loggersand the gc/empty_cachecleanup partly duplicatemegatron_example_runner.py. They could move into a shared helper later.- Tests were read but not run.
Complex PR: 1 existing test file modified or removed. Looping in a human for approval.

Agreed with CodeRabbit's comment above. I think it would be great to address the comment before merging.

I reproduced both cleanup leaks with a minimal in-process example.

[P2] Please restore the full sys.path snapshot here. A script-added entry survives this remove() and can change imports in later tests; I reproduced that with a script that appends one path. If a script removes example_dir, this line also raises ValueError before the remaining state is restored. Saving the original path and restoring its contents in finally handles both cases.

[P3] Please reset levels for loggers created during the script as well. They are absent from levels, so a level set by the script persists after the run; I reproduced this with a new logger set to ERROR. This also applies to quantize.py's __main__ logger if it did not exist before the first run.
What does this PR do?
Type of change: Tests (CI speed-up)
Follow-up to #2724. Each step of the diffusers example tests started a fresh
python <script>.pysubprocess. On the tiny test models most of each step was startup: about 20s importing torch/diffusers/modelopt and initializing CUDA. For example,quantize.py's own timer reports 3.1s for the SDXL quantize run inside a ~30s step.tests/_test_utils/examples/diffusers_example_runner.py). It plugs into the existingset_in_process_runnerhook, like the megatron_bridge suite does, and runs the script withrunpy.run_path(..., run_name="__main__"). Argument parsing andif __name__ == "__main__":blocks run exactly as on the command line;diffusion_trt.pyswapstorch.nn.RMSNormonly in that block. After each step it puts back the process-wide state the script changed:config, utils, quantize, ...), with any same-named module imported elsewhere stashed and restored;torch.nn.RMSNormswap;quantize.pyattaches to the captured stdout;sys.path.pytestmark = pytest.mark.usefixtures("in_process_examples"):test_diffusers.py,test_export_diffusers_hf_ckpt.pyandsparsity/test_sparsity.py. The deprecated ONNX/TRT test, which CI doesn't run, keeps using subprocesses.torch.compilesteps stay in a subprocess. They already passenv=, which forces one, and that is where the Inductor settings and cudagraphs belong. The expected fallback warning is filtered.examples/diffusers/quantization/{onnx_utils,calib}/__init__.py. As namespace packages these dirs lose to any same-named regular module anywhere onsys.path. Importingonnxruntime.transformersappends its own directory, which holds anonnx_utils.py. Once that has happened in a long-lived process, from onnx_utils.export import ...indiffusion_trt.pyand in the ONNX/TRT deprecation test resolves to onnxruntime's module. A fresh subprocess never hit this. Making them regular packages lets the example's own directory win. Both files contain only the license header.Usage
N/A (tests only).
Testing
I ran these on an RTX PRO 6000 in
nvcr.io/nvidia/pytorch:26.07-py3, set up like the CI lane (editable.[onnx,hf,dev-test],diffusers==0.39.0). Both runs usedpytest tests/examples/diffusers --ignore=test_diffusers_onnx_trt.py --ignore=fastgen --cov, withCOVERAGE_PROCESS_STARTset as in CI:main(af07754)Per-test examples:
The three
torch.compiletests remain the bulk. They took 113s locally on a warm Inductor cache and 190s on #2724's CI run, so I expect the lane's pytest step to drop from about 21 min to about 6 min.tests/unit/test_diffusers_example_runner.py(CPU): runs a fake example that makes all of the above process-wide changes, imports a bare-name siblingutilswhile another module namedutilsis already loaded, and exits nonzero on request. It checks the output is captured and every change is undone, and that a nonzero exit raises with the output attached.pre-commitpasses.Before your PR is "Ready for review"
