Skip source MTP passthrough when a live MTP module exists.
An Omni model with one decoder layer and a live model.mtp can reach export_mcore_gpt_to_hf. The exporter writes live MTP tensors to the final layer shard, then copies the source language_model.mtp.* tensors into the first layer shard. With one decoder layer, both shards are the same dictionary, so the source values replace the live Megatron values.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Approving: this is a small, correct registration that reuses the existing prefix helper, with tests for the new mapping and the grouped-GEMM layout choice.
No action needed.
- I checked the MTP path.
_mtp_prefixturnslanguage_model.backbone.…intolanguage_model.mtp.…, which matches the prefixedmtp.*rules, so the live MTP export lands where the source checkpoint has it. - One edge case:
_copy_mtp_state_dict_from_pretrainedonly matches keys that start withmtp.. So if a model is built without MTP, this model'slanguage_model.mtp.*tensors would not be copied from the source. The_verify_exported_keysself-check should catch that and raise instead of writing an incomplete checkpoint. This is fine for the flow the PR describes. old_prefix=""prefixes every target, and every value innemotron_h_causal_lm_exportis aCustomModuleMapping, so the new test's check over all keys is sound. The helper's defaults keep the Qwen-VL behaviour unchanged.- The new file's header matches
LICENSE_HEADER(2026), so there's no licensing concern. - Existing tests are only extended with new parametrize entries and one new test. No assertions were changed.
Complex PR: 1 existing test file modified or removed. Looping in a human for approval.

[SUGGESTION] The generalization is correct for both current callers, but old_prefix="" (the Omni call) makes the startswith guard on line 272 vacuous and this docstring's contract misleading.
prefix.startswith("") is always True, so for the Omni mapping every target is unconditionally prefixed — the "other targets are unchanged" clause never applies. That is exactly what the Omni layout wants (test_mcore_export_mappings.py:98-100 asserts all 28 targets get the prefix), so there is no bug today. But the next reader can reasonably conclude from the signature that old_prefix="" leaves non-matching targets alone, when in fact the empty prefix matches everything — including a hypothetical future Nemotron-H rule that already carried an absolute name.
Cheapest fix is to state the degenerate case:
| """Nest a text-model mapping under the VLM's language-model prefix. | |
| Targets starting with ``old_prefix`` have it replaced by ``new_prefix``; other targets are | |
| unchanged. | |
| """Nest a text-model mapping under the VLM's language-model prefix. | |
| Targets starting with ``old_prefix`` have it replaced by ``new_prefix``; other targets are | |
| unchanged. ``old_prefix=""`` matches every target, prefixing the whole mapping. | |
| """ |
Not blocking — the behavior is right and the test pins it.

Done in fb758e8c4: added "old_prefix="" matches every target, prefixing the whole mapping." to the docstring.

Claude review — 1 IMPORTANT, 1 SUGGESTION
Scope: full review (trigger was a bare /claude review). 6 changed files; reviewed all 3 modelopt/ files and both test files. CHANGELOG.rst checked for entry placement only. No prior Claude review on this PR, so nothing to deduplicate against; CodeRabbit's one open finding (duplicate MTP writes from a language_model.mtp. passthrough) is already resolved — that prefix is gone from NEMOTRON_H_OMNI_VISION_PREFIXES, and test_mcore_export_mappings.py:106-107 pins it.
Findings — CRITICAL: 0 · IMPORTANT: 1 · SUGGESTION: 1
-
[IMPORTANT Export]
mcore_nemotron_omni.py— the inherited MTP rules now targetlanguage_model.mtp., but the exporter's fallback copy path still hardcodes a baremtp.prefix (unified_export_megatron.py:920,:928, and the"mtp*"exclusion at:935). For the Omni checkpoint those keys arelanguage_model.mtp.*, so nothing matches and_copy_mtp_state_dict_from_pretrainedreturns{}. Reached only when the bridge builds no live MTP (mtp_num_layers=0, or aprune_minitron.pyoutput, which sets it to 0 explicitly) — not the configuration the PR's E2E runs exercised, hence latent._verify_exported_keyscatches most of these but blames the decoder mapping; it is skipped entirely for an unreadable hub source, where the export silently yields an MTP-less checkpoint that loads fine and never speculates. Suggested fix in the inline comment: derive the prefix fromall_mcore_mappings["mtp.enorm"], mirroring how_copy_decoder_mtp_layers_from_pretrainedalready deriveslayers_prefix— that keepsNemotronHForCausalLMbyte-identical. -
[SUGGESTION]
with_language_model_prefix—old_prefix=""makes thestartswithguard vacuous, so the docstring's "other targets are unchanged" clause never applies to the Omni call. Correct behavior, misleading contract; one docstring line fixes it.
What checked out
- Grouped-GEMM layout. Registering the arch in
all_mcore_hf_export_mappingis exactly whatuse_moe_grouped_gemmkeys off (mbridge.py:114tests"experts.linear_fc1" in ...), and the inheritedGroupedMLPSlicingrules supply it. The root-cause fix, not a workaround. - Vision passthrough. The three prefixes are trailing-dot-terminated, which
load_multimodal_componentsneeds for its shard-levelstartswithfilter, andexclude_modulesderivesvision_model*/vision_projector*/mlp1*viaremovesuffix(".")— so the unquantized tower is correctly declared. - KV-scale export.
core_attentionsurvives the prefixing aslanguage_model.backbone.layers.{}.mixer., sokv_cache_quant_algois still emitted; the test pins the prefix. - MTP retarget under the new nesting.
_mtp_prefixdispatches on"backbone" in prefixfirst, and every Omni rule reached withis_mtp=Truecarriesbackbone, solanguage_model.backbone.layers.N.becomeslanguage_model.mtp.layers.N.correctly. Worth knowing it is load-bearing: a future Omni rule withoutbackbonewould fall through toprefix.replace("model", "mtp", 1), which mangleslanguage_model.intolanguage_mtp.— the guard at:1359coversmodel.language_model.but not a barelanguage_model.. Fine as-is; just fragile if the mapping grows. - Backward compatibility. The helper's new args default to the old behavior, and the Qwen-VL mappings are untouched. No
modelopt_stateschema change, no mode registration, no public API signature change. Absence fromall_mcore_hf_import_mappingis consistent with the other VLM archs (only Qwen3-VL has an importer). - Changelog is one sentence under the existing
*Megatron Framework (M-LM / M-Bridge)*sub-section, as CONTRIBUTING asks.
Risk: low. Additive registration plus a backward-compatible helper generalization; the quantize/QAD/export path the PR actually targets is well covered by the two unit tests and the reported GB300 E2E. The one IMPORTANT finding is a latent gap on a configuration this PR does not exercise, worth closing before a user hits it on a pruned or mtp_num_layers=0 checkpoint.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Claude review passed — no blocking issues found. LGTM
Scope: full review (the trigger comment carried no scoping instructions). 6 files changed, 67 additions; reviewed all 3 modelopt/ files and both test files, plus surrounding context in unified_export_megatron.py (mapping consumption, is_mtp prefix rewriting, vision passthrough merge, export self-check) and mbridge.py (grouped-GEMM selection). Skipped CHANGELOG.rst beyond confirming the entry exists and reads for external users.
Findings — CRITICAL: 0, IMPORTANT: 0, SUGGESTION: 1
What I verified
- Mapping derivation is sound.
with_language_model_prefix(nemotron_h_causal_lm_export, old_prefix="", new_prefix="language_model.")prepends unconditionally (every string starts with the empty string), which is the intended semantics for a layout that nestslm_headtoo. Thetype(m)(...)reconstruction is safe: everyCustomModuleMappingsubclass used by the Nemotron-H rules (NameRemapping,QKVSlicing,SelfAttentionScaling,GroupedMLPSlicing) takes the same(target_name_or_prefix, func_kwargs)signature, andfunc_kwargsis deep-copied so the Omni and text mappings do not alias the nestedparallel_config/mappingdicts. - Backward compatibility holds. The new
old_prefix/new_prefixdefault to the previous literals, so the three Qwen-VL mappings derived through this helper are unchanged. The only other call sites aremcore_qwen3vl.pyandmcore_qwen35vl.py, both relying on the defaults. - The
is_mtpretargeting composes with the new nesting._mtp_prefixtests"backbone" in prefixbefore its root-replacement branches, solanguage_model.backbone.layers.N.mixer.correctly becomeslanguage_model.mtp.layers.N.mixer.— it does not fall through to themodel.language_model.branch (which would have been wrong here) or toprefix.replace("model", "mtp", 1). This is the subtle interaction I most expected to break, and it is correct. - Vision passthrough is consistent.
NEMOTRON_H_OMNI_VISION_PREFIXESholds nolanguage_model.prefix, so the passthrough merge insave_pretrainedcannot double-write the live-exported MTP tensors — the regression called out in the PR description. The matchingexclude_modulesentries (vision_model*,vision_projector*,mlp1*) are derived from the same tuple, so the unquantized tower is correctly advertised to deployments. CodeRabbit's earlier concern about the source-MTP prefix is resolved by its removal, and the new test asserts it stays gone. - Grouped-GEMM selection follows registration.
use_moe_grouped_gemmkeys off"experts.linear_fc1" in all_mcore_hf_export_mapping[arch], which the derived mapping now provides, soquantize.py/distill.pyagree onTEGroupedMLPand the exporter'sNotImplementedErrorguard for unmapped fused experts is unreachable for this arch. - Tests pin the behavior that would silently regress. The KV-scale prefix and per-expert MoE assertions guard the two documented silent-failure modes (an unquantized KV cache; packed expert scales vLLM cannot load), and the structural test ties every Omni target to its Nemotron-H counterpart, so a future edit to the text mapping cannot drift.
The one suggestion (non-blocking)
The MTP copy-from-source fallback in _copy_mtp_state_dict_from_pretrained matches a hardcoded "mtp." root, which will not match this architecture's language_model.mtp.* source keys. It only triggers when the Megatron model has no live MTP — not the path the end-to-end GB300 runs exercised — and it fails loudly via _verify_exported_keys rather than writing a bad checkpoint, though the error message misattributes the cause. Details and a prefix-derivation fix are in the inline comment; deferring is reasonable if you would rather keep this PR to registration only.
Risk: low. Additive registration of one architecture plus a parameterized helper whose defaults preserve existing behavior. No modelopt_state schema, mode-registration, or public-API change, and the new plugin module imports nothing optional at load time beyond what mcore_common already pulls in.
…export The new model nests a Nemotron-H language model, lm_head included, under language_model., but its architecture had no entry in the export mappings. use_moe_grouped_gemm() therefore built its experts as SequentialMLP, and HF export had no rules for it. Register the architecture in its own mcore_nemotron_omni module: the Nemotron-H rules (MTP included) nested under language_model., plus a vision passthrough for vision_model., vision_projector. and mlp1. Generalize with_language_model_prefix() with old_prefix/new_prefix so it covers this layout; the defaults keep the Qwen-VL behavior. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Yue <yueshen@nvidia.com>
…e MTP _copy_mtp_state_dict_from_pretrained matched a hard-coded "mtp." root, so for NemotronH_Omni_Reasoning_V3 (MTP under language_model.mtp.) a model built without MTP exported no MTP head. Derive the root from the arch's mtp.eh_proj rule instead; archs without one keep "mtp.", and Nemotron-H resolves to "mtp." unchanged. Also note in with_language_model_prefix that old_prefix="" prefixes every target. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Yue <yueshen@nvidia.com>

…ace/JSONL (#2587) ## What does this PR do? **Type of change:** new feature `distill.py` can currently only read SFT data from `--sft_dataset_root`, which expects `{"input", "output"}` records already preprocessed into a Megatron dataset root. This adds the complementary path: point `--sft_hf_dataset` at a local chat `<file>.jsonl` or a Hub `<hub_id>[:<split>]`, and each conversation is rendered by the model's own chat template with the loss masked to assistant turns. Multi-turn records train on all of their responses rather than only the last. The two sources are mutually exclusive and the existing `--sft_dataset_root` path is unchanged — its branch becomes `elif args.sft:` and behaves identically when `--sft_hf_dataset` is absent. The Megatron-Bridge symbols this needs (`DirectHFSFTDatasetConfig`, `ChatSFTPreprocessingConfig`, `HFDatasetSourceConfig`) are imported behind a `try/except`, so an older Bridge still runs every other mode and `--sft_hf_dataset` reports why it is unavailable instead of failing at import. ### Usage ```bash python distill.py \ --teacher_hf_path $HF --student_hf_path $HF --student_megatron_path $PTQ \ --sft --sft_hf_dataset $POOL/train.jsonl --sft_hf_validation $POOL/validation.jsonl \ --sft_loss_mode assistant \ --seq_length 65536 --mbs 1 --gbs 64 --train_iters 400 --no_skip_lm_loss \ --output_dir $OUT ``` New flags: `--sft_hf_dataset`, `--sft_hf_validation`, `--sft_loss_mode`. Both data flags take the same spec: a path ending in `.json`/`.jsonl` is read as a local chat jsonl; anything else is `<hub_id>[:<split>]` with the split defaulting to `train`, so HF split slicing works too (e.g. `--sft_hf_validation <hub_id>:train[:1000]`). `--sft_hf_validation` is required when `--eval_iters > 0`. ### Why This is the data path used to produce a published NVFP4 W4A16 QAD result on the public Nemotron blend. Those flags do not exist upstream, so that result cannot currently be reproduced with `examples/megatron_bridge/distill.py` as shipped. Everything else those runs used (`--no_skip_lm_loss`, `--kd_loss_scale`, parallelism, lr schedule, `--recompute_*`) is already here. ## Testing The flags and wiring have been exercised over ~16 QAD training runs (Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B, NVFP4 W4A16 and W4A4, 400 iterations each on 8 nodes) using this exact code path, with a 35.8k-conversation local chat jsonl and `--sft_loss_mode assistant`. Since porting onto `main`, the chat-data path of this PR has trained a new model on GB300: a 600-iteration NVFP4 QAD (8 nodes, TP1/CP4/EP32, 32k seq), and a `main` + #2704 + this PR smoke run with no local patches. Those runs predate the switch to the two-flag spec above, which only changes how the `HFDatasetSourceConfig` is built; the spec parsing was checked on local, Hub and sliced-split inputs. `DirectHFSFTDatasetConfig` takes no `seed` (Bridge `main` and 0.6.0), so it is not passed. `tests/examples/megatron_bridge/test_distill.py` gains `test_distill_llm_sft_hf_chat` (tiny Qwen3, multi-turn chat jsonl, `--sft_hf_validation`, `eval_iters=1`) and `test_hf_source_spec`; both plus the existing `test_distill_llm_sft` pass in `nvcr.io/nvidia/nemo:26.08` with its bundled Megatron-Bridge (7 passed). ## Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - [x] Make sure you read and follow [Contributor Guidelines](../CONTRIBUTING.md) - [x] Did you write any new necessary tests? — `test_distill_llm_sft_hf_chat`, `test_hf_source_spec` - [x] Did you add or update any necessary documentation? — README section for the chat-data path - [x] Did you update `CHANGELOG.rst`? — yes, under *Megatron Framework* ## Additional Information Hub datasets with a named config (HF `name=` / Bridge `subset`) are deliberately left out to keep the spec minimal; it can be added as `<hub_id>:<subset>:<split>` if useful. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Added an option to train with Hugging Face chat datasets from local JSON/JSONL files or Hub datasets, with an optional training split. * Chat data uses the model’s chat template. All prior concerns are fixed in the diff, but the changelog entry for the new model was dropped and a human needs to sign off on a test-helper edit.
Needs action:
- Add back the
CHANGELOG.rstentry under the Megatron Framework section, or say why it should wait. An earlier revision had it; the PR body now says "deferred". - Confirm, as a human, the edit to
_make_exporter_for_mtpintest_unified_export_megatron.py. It adds an optionalarchargument and defaultsall_mcore_mappingsto{}. Existing assertions are unchanged, and the GLM tests still override the mapping, so the edit looks justified.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the MTP passthrough could write MTP tensors twice (the
language_model.mtp.prefix is gone, and a test pins that), the copy-from-source fallback hard-codedmtp.(the prefix now comes from the arch'smtp.eh_projrule, with a test for each arch), and theold_prefix=""docstring. - Only
mcore_nemotron.pydefinesmtp.eh_proj, so other archs keep themtp.default. Nemotron-H's root and itsmtp*exclusion are unchanged. - The new file's header matches the standard 2026 NVIDIA header.
What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
Adds Megatron-Bridge support for a new model, whose HF config declares
architectures = ["NemotronH_Omni_Reasoning_V3"]. Its language model is the same Nemotron-H as the text models, but nothing inall_mcore_hf_export_mappingmatched the Omni architecture name. That broke two things:use_moe_grouped_gemm()found noexperts.linear_fc1export rule, soquantize.py/distill.pysilently built the MoE experts asSequentialMLPinstead ofTEGroupedMLP.language_model.-nested names, and copied no vision weights.Changes:
NemotronH_Omni_Reasoning_V3as the Nemotron-H export rules with every target nested underlanguage_model.(lm_headincluded, unlike Qwen-VL). Add a vision passthrough forvision_model.,vision_projector.andmlp1., which are copied verbatim from the source checkpoint. The MTP head is exported from the live model through the Nemotron-Hmtp.*rules.with_language_model_prefix()gainsold_prefix/new_prefix, so the Omni layout reuses it instead of adding a second helper. The defaults ("model."->"model.language_model.") keep the Qwen-VL mappings unchanged.mtp.eh_projrule instead of a hard-codedmtp., so this layout'slanguage_model.mtp.*is found. Nemotron-H still resolves tomtp..Usage
No new API. The standard
examples/megatron_bridgescripts now handle the model directly:torchrun --nproc_per_node 4 examples/megatron_bridge/quantize.py \ --hf_model_name_or_path <new-model-BF16> --trust_remote_code \ --tp_size 1 --ep_size 4 --recipe <recipe> --export_megatron_path <out>Testing
tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export/plugins/test_moe_layout_choice.pyandtest_mcore_export_mappings.pycover the Omni architecture: the grouped-GEMM rule exists, KV-scale export prefix, per-expert MoE export, and every target equalslanguage_model.+ the Nemotron-H target. Locally: 25 passed.main+ this PR + examples/megatron_bridge: distill on chat data straight from HuggingFace/JSONL #2587, no local patches: NVFP4 PTQ (32 calib samples, TEGroupedMLP), 20-iter QAD, then stockexport_quantized_megatron_to_hf.pyat PP4. All 1,040 source MTP keys are exported exactly once, in BF16 and inexclude_modules.Before your PR is "Ready for review"
CONTRIBUTING.md: N/AAdditional Information
KD-only QAD does not train the MTP head (
mtp_1/mtp_2loss stays 0), so the exported head is bit-identical to the BF16 source. An earlier revision also passedlanguage_model.mtp.through from the source checkpoint, which wrote every MTP tensor a second time into the first PP stage's shard; that prefix is gone.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
