fix(shell): keep git from opening a hidden editor in Pi's bash tool - #2677
Pi's bash tool inherits the user's EDITOR/VISUAL, and gentle-shell did not set GIT_EDITOR for the Pi it launches. So git rebase --continue (which runs git commit -e) or a bare git commit opened something like nvim with no terminal anyone could reach. The tool call never returned.
buildPiInvocation now adds GIT_EDITOR=true and GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR=true to Pi's env when baseEnv doesn't set them. The defaults are applied after baseEnv, so a key that is present but undefined still gets them. A value the user already exported wins, including an empty one. On Windows the names are matched case-insensitively, so a user's git_editor that went through the bundled launcher's plain-object env copy is kept. Also on Windows, undefined keys that have a defined case variant are removed before spawning. Otherwise Node's case-insensitive dedup keeps the undefined GIT_EDITOR, skips it, and drops the user's git_editor. With true as the editor, git keeps the prepared message (rebase/merge continue) or aborts an empty commit right away, instead of waiting. Subagents inherit this env from the parent Pi. EDITOR/VISUAL are left alone, so Pi's own external-editor feature is unchanged. I did not add GIT_PAGER=cat, because git already skips the pager when stdout is not a TTY, as in the bash tool. runtime/gentle-shell-launcher.mjs was regenerated with build:runtime-modules.
Testing:
New tests in tests/gentle-shell-launcher.test.ts cover:
the defaults, with EDITOR=nvim still passed through
explicit user values being kept
an explicitly undefined GIT_EDITOR
a mixed-case editor key in a bundled env on Windows vs. Linux
GIT_EDITOR: undefined with git_editor: "vim" on Windows vs. Linux
Three existing exact-env assertions were updated for the new keys.
tests/gentle-shell-launcher.test.ts passes (235 tests), and check:runtime-modules is clean.
tests/standalone-config-home.test.ts passes.
In tests/gentle-shell-bin.test.ts, 4 TTY resume-hint tests fail both with and without this change in my environment.
By hand, a conflicted git rebase --continue with EDITOR="sleep 1000" GIT_EDITOR=true completes immediately.
This change was prepared with an AI coding agent (Claude) and reviewed by me before submitting. I'm happy to make any changes you'd like.

Bug Fixes
Git operations launched by the app now use non-interactive defaults for editor settings when none are provided, preventing unexpected editor prompts.
Existing editor settings are preserved, including explicitly empty values. Environment variable matching also accounts for case differences on Windows.

Walkthrough
The launcher now sets GIT_EDITOR and GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR to "true" when those variables are unset. Values supplied in the base environment take precedence. Tests cover these defaults and their use in Pi invocation environments.
Changes: Git editor defaults

Summary
Define and apply Git editor defaults lib/gentle-shell-launcher.ts, runtime/gentle-shell-launcher.mjs, tests/gentle-shell-launcher.test.ts
Both launchers add defaults for unset Git editor variables and apply them in buildPiInvocation before the base environment. Tests cover default values, explicit overrides, and invocation environments.
Git uses non-interactive editor defaults when none are explicitly set. No merge-blocking issue was identified.

Explanation
The title names the primary change: Git is kept from opening a hidden editor in Pi's bash tool. The changeset adds GIT_EDITOR and GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR defaults of "true" in buildPiInvocation, along with Windows case-insensitive env matching and tests. The title is specific, uses conventional-commit form, and matches the linked issue #2448 objective.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2448 requires non-interactive Git editor defaults for Pi's bash environment and preservation of explicit user values. buildPiInvocation adds GIT_EDITOR=true and GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR=true when the values are undefined. It preserves explicit values, including empty values, handles Windows case variants, and leaves EDITOR and VISUAL unchanged. Tests cover the defaults and the override cases. GIT_PAGER=cat is optional in the issue and is not required.

Explanation
The changes remain within issue #2448. They update Git editor environment handling, regenerate the runtime launcher, and add focused tests and required exact-environment updates. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Nice fix, the GIT_EDITOR=true default is the right call: git commit -e keeps the prepared message, so rebase/merge continue instead of waiting on an editor nobody can reach. Leaving EDITOR/VISUAL alone and skipping GIT_PAGER (git already skips the pager without a TTY) are both good scoping choices.
One thing to fix before merge: CodeRabbit's second finding is real. If baseEnv has GIT_EDITOR: undefined, the spread at lib/gentle-shell-launcher.ts:1094 overwrites the default, Node drops the key, and git inherits the user's editor again, which is the original hang. Spreading the defaults after baseEnv (and filtering on === undefined there) plus a test with an explicit undefined would close it.
A smaller question: on Windows, does bundledChildEnv preserve the original key casing? If a user has git_editor, the check would miss it and add an uppercase GIT_EDITOR=true next to it.
@coderabbitai both good catches, fixed. On Windows, nonInteractiveGitEnv now matches existing env names case-insensitively, so a git_editor that went through bundledChildEnv is kept (on other platforms the check is still exact). The defaults are now spread after baseEnv, so an explicitly undefined GIT_EDITOR still gets true. I added tests for both: a mixed-case bundled env and an undefined key.

@coderabbitai good catch, confirmed against Node's win32 dedup. On Windows, buildPiInvocation now removes undefined keys that have a defined case variant before spawning, so { GIT_EDITOR: undefined, git_editor: "vim" } reaches Pi with git_editor=vim. I added a regression test for it on win32 and linux.

@orshih6 Thanks for fixing this and adding regression tests for win32 and Linux. The described change addresses the Windows deduplication case: removing the undefined key preserves the defined git_editor="vim" value. Keeping that cleanup Windows-only preserves case-sensitive environment handling on Linux.
