• Discuss ongoing spec work

[robertlong]

Notes

• Robert and Nate working on Three.js implementation (TypedArrayView / SharedArray buffer backed API)
• Entity ids / network ids discussion
  • WASM is good with passing around numbers, can hold on to game object references by mapping from Uint32 to GameObject when crossing the WASM boundary.
  • In a similar way network GUIDs can be mapped
• Scripting vs Programming discussion
  • Arguments against scripting not being programming largely invalid with JS, LUA, etc being robust JIT compiled programming languages
  • Scripting in this context largely references game dev process where engine exposes features for content creators to "script"
• Jin asked about scripting in an avatar context
  • Scripting API should be able to run in an avatar context to enable similar things to VRChat etc.
  • Need to be able to:
    • Trigger animations
    • OSC communication for controlling avatar animations/emotes/behavior
      • https://broken.place/using-osccore-to-build-an-ar-music-controller/
      • Highlights the need for local socket communication for extensibility, could probably compile OSC/MIDI libraries to WASM targeting these low level APIs.

      • WASI has support for sockets, perhaps need a way to expose sockets for local communication https://github.com/WebAssembly/WASI/blob/main/phases/ephemeral/witx/wasi_ephemeral_sock.witx
    • Hai's work in this space has many different use cases
