fix(desktop): name the model that does quick jobs when the fast role is on Claude Code - #514
Since #507, when every fast-role model is Claude Code and "Claude Code for everything" is off, memory add-or-update, extraction, summaries and chat titles run on another model: the main model's fallbacks, then the executor, planner and main model. Settings still warned that new memories and summaries wouldn't work.
Settings now works out the same stand-in from the saved roles (new fastStandIns in lib/claudeCode.ts, same order as stand_ins in the engine) and says which model does those jobs, for example "Claude Code can't do quick background jobs, so ollama_chat/qwen3:8b does them." The old warning stays when there is no stand-in, and other roles still get their own warning. The check-up's fast-role flag is unchanged.
I did it in the window because it already reads the saved config, so the name follows role changes straight away. A note on stand_ins and a line in docs/API.md say the two need to change together.
Tests cover the order, the empty fast role, the cases where the engine keeps the refusal, and Claude Code doing everything.
Settings now identifies the model used for quick background jobs when a fast-role stand-in exists. The existing warning remains when no stand-in is available, and the check-up continues to flag the fast role.
fastStandIns returns unique, eligible non-Claude-Code models in the specified candidate order. fixableRoles excludes embedding. Tests cover candidate selection and cases that return no stand-in.
Update the Settings warning desktop/src/features/models/ClaudeCodeSection.tsx, docs/API.md, changes/510.fixed.md, sentient/llm/claude_code.py
When a stand-in exists, Settings names the model used for quick background jobs and excludes the fast role from the unable-to-run warning. When no stand-in exists, the warning remains. The documentation and release note describe this behavior.
existence-master/Sentient#507: Adds the engine’s stand_ins behavior, whose candidate order and refusal conditions the desktop implementation mirrors.

Explanation
Issue #510 requires Settings to name an available stand-in for fast-role jobs, retain the warning when no stand-in exists, match the engine order, and leave the check-up flag unchanged. fastStandIns implements the order of primary fallbacks, executor, planner, and primary model. ClaudeCodeRoleWarning reports the selected stand-in and excludes the fast role from stuck-role repair only when a stand-in exists. The summary states that tests cover ordering, no-stand-in cases, refusal cases, and Claude Code for everything. No change to the check-up flag is reported.

Thanks @Mittalnew, this is close. I tested it end to end and the main part works; one small thing to fix before it goes in.
What I tested
Engine from this branch, fresh data folder, Claude Code on (not "everything"), main claude-code/sonnet, fast claude-code/haiku, executor ollama_chat/qwen3:8b. After one real chat the log says the fast model claude-code/haiku can't do background work (Claude Code only answers chats), so ollama_chat/qwen3:8b does its jobs (memory, summaries, titles), and usage shows 2 background calls on qwen3:8b (a memory saved, the chat titled "Planning a trip to Lisbon next spring with your sister?").
Changed the order to executor ollama_chat/gemma3:4b and main-model fallbacks [claude-code/opus, ollama_chat/qwen3:8b]: the engine still used qwen3:8b (fallbacks first) and never called gemma3:4b. With no executor, planner or fallbacks, the engine keeps the refusal ("no model could title the chat...").
Built the app and took screenshots of Settings > Models on a seeded demo home with the same configs:
Stand-in case: "Claude Code can't do quick background jobs, so ollama_chat/qwen3:8b does them." That is the same model the engine picked. On main the same home says "new memories, summaries and tasks won't work", so the bug is real and fixed here.
No stand-in case: the old warning, word for word the same as main.
npm run typecheck, npm run build and npm test (116 pass) are clean, CI is green and the CLA check passes.
Please fix: the button still changes the fast role (CodeRabbit's second thread, line 209)
In the stand-in screenshot the text only names Planner ("Planner gets it from your main model. Until it uses another model, tasks won't work"), but the button reads "Use gemma3:4b for these" and, because useFix builds its patch from chat (which still has fast), clicking it also overwrites the fast model even though it is covered. Building chat from stuck instead of refusing would fix both the plural label and the patch. When only the fast role is left (stuck is empty) you could keep the button for it or hide it; either is fine, your call.
The other open thread (line 208, optimistic fallback cache): I don't think that one needs a change here. FallbackEditor already updates the cache before its debounced save and the rest of Settings follows that, so the warning simply matches what the Roles section shows. A short reply on the thread saying so is enough to resolve it.
Both threads need resolving before the merge queue will take it.
Change the alert title when the stand-in covers every refusing role.
If fast is the only refusing role and standIn exists, stuck is empty. The alert still says “Some work can't run on Claude Code,” although the message says the stand-in does those jobs. Use a stand-in-specific title when stuck is empty.

Thanks for the thorough testing. I pushed the fix for the button (0d1a79a) and replied on the other thread. Both threads are resolved, so this should be ready for another look.
