Block Compression Details

BC1 (DXT1) - 8 bytes per 4x4 block

Block structure (8 bytes):
  Bytes 0-1: Color0 (RGB565)
  Bytes 2-3: Color1 (RGB565)
  Bytes 4-7: 4x4 pixel indices (2 bits each)

Color interpolation:
  If Color0 > Color1:
    Color2 = (2*Color0 + Color1) / 3
    Color3 = (Color0 + 2*Color1) / 3
  Else:
    Color2 = (Color0 + Color1) / 2
    Color3 = transparent black (0,0,0,0)

BC3 (DXT5) - 16 bytes per 4x4 block

Block structure (16 bytes):
  Bytes 0-7:  Alpha block
    Byte 0: Alpha0
    Byte 1: Alpha1
    Bytes 2-7: 4x4 pixel indices (3 bits each)
  Bytes 8-15: Color block (same as BC1)

Alpha interpolation (8 levels):
  If Alpha0 > Alpha1:
    Alpha[2-7] = interpolate between Alpha0 and Alpha1
  Else:
    Alpha[2-5] = interpolate
    Alpha[6] = 0 (fully transparent)
    Alpha[7] = 255 (fully opaque)

BC5 - 16 bytes per 4x4 block

Two independent channels (R and G):
  Bytes 0-7: Red channel (same as BC3 alpha)
  Bytes 8-15: Green channel (same as BC3 alpha)

Normal map reconstruction:
  X = Red * 2 - 1    (range -1 to 1)
  Y = Green * 2 - 1  (range -1 to 1)
  Z = sqrt(1 - X^2 - Y^2)

Lossless Conversion Strategy

Problem: BC Compression is Lossy

BC formats use lossy compression similar to JPEG. Direct BC → PNG → BC round-trip will introduce compression artifacts.

Solution: Lossless Storage + Best-Effort Recompression

  1. Decode (DDS → PNG):

    • Decompress BC blocks to full RGBA (8 bits/channel)
    • Save as PNG (lossless, no compression artifacts)
    • PNG size: ~4x larger than DDS
    • Use case: Editing, modification, inspection
  2. Encode (PNG → DDS):

    • Read PNG as RGBA
    • Compress to BC format using high-quality encoder
    • Use case: Reimporting modified textures to game
    • Note: Will NOT be bit-identical to original

Quality Preservation

To minimize quality loss:

  • Use highest quality BC encoder (e.g., Intel ISPC Texture Compressor)
  • For BC1: Use error diffusion, perceptual weighting
  • For BC3: Encode alpha and color independently with max quality
  • For BC5: Normalize and encode as BC5SNorm for signed normals
  • For BC7: Use mode 6 for RGBA, slow search

Key Points

  1. No decompression on CPU: BC data stays compressed until GPU rasterization
  2. DirectX::ScratchImage: Temporary staging buffer from DirectXTex library
  3. All mip levels uploaded: Full mip chain in GPU memory
  4. D3D12 pipeline: Modern rendering API, Windows 10+

Texture GUIDs

Textures are referenced by 64-bit hex GUIDs:

  • Example: a8d646095a6d248b
  • Format: lowercase hex, no dashes
  • Lookup: Hash table in LoadoutData CosmeticArrays

Next Steps

For Modding

  1. Decode all textures: texconv batch decode _extracted/ png/
  2. Edit in Photoshop/GIMP: Modify PNG files
  3. Re-encode (TODO): Need BC encoder library
  4. Replace in package: Inject modified DDS into .pkg
  5. Test in-game: Verify texture loading

For Implementation

  1. Integrate Intel ISPC Texture Compressor:

    • Add as Go CGo binding or subprocess
    • Implement BC1/BC3/BC5/BC7 encoding
    • Add quality presets (fast, normal, slow)
  2. Add mipmap generation:

    • Downsample base mip with box or Lanczos filter
    • Generate full mip chain
    • Encode each mip level independently
  3. Add format detection for PNG→DDS:

    • Detect alpha usage → BC1 vs BC3
    • Detect normal map patterns → BC5
    • Detect HDR range → BC6H
    • Default to BC7 for maximum quality
  4. Add batch optimization:

    • Parallel encoding (goroutines)
    • Progress bars
    • Error recovery
